Many carmakers and buyers are embracing electric vehicles, but not all policymakers share that viewpoint. EVs and some of the intense disruptions facing the auto industry were the subject of a fiery, policy-oriented roundtable discussion of lawmakers at the recent 2024 Washington, D.C. Auto Show.

Here are some highlights from the panel, which featured several members of Congress who are part of the U.S. House Auto Caucus: Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas). The discussion was moderated by Dafna Linzer, executive vice president and editorial director of U.S. News & World Report.

When it comes to transportation policy, “it’s hard to have a blind eye and a deaf ear to what the market really needs as opposed to what Washington is dictating,” Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly said during a panel moderated by U.S. News at the 2024 Washington, D.C. Auto Show.

“The manufacturers and the government are trying to shove these EV vehicles down people’s throat. They don’t want it,” said Rep. Auto Show. “I’m not against EV vehicles, but I’m for competition, and we don’t have that right now.”
